REAL (Responsive Education Alternative Labs)
Boston Day and Evening Academy (BDEA) created the REAL intensive in response to requests from educators for coaching in writing competencies and benchmarks to measure student progress. For over a decade there has been a growing interest nationally about the creation of systems and structures that support student-centered, trauma-sensitive learning and meeting students where they are when they enroll at school. The traditional constructs of grade levels (9, 10, 11, 12) and Carnegie Units (A, B,C, D, F) do not give anyone an accurate understanding of what a student does or does not know. Often, grades include more about attendance, homework, and behavior than they do about content and skill.
